Teachers With Blogs
Imagine firing up your favorite blog and finding out that your history paper is due today. Kind of frightening for those of us that usually waited until the last minute to turn in their homework.
Blogs have become very popular with teachers and it's no real surprise.
Most teachers like to write and blogs give them easy access to a public forum. Teaching blogs have been springing up at a tremendous pace.
Homework assignments with expert commentary. Reminders of upcoming events or what happened on this day in history. The blog format has much to offer the education world.
Here are some examples of teachers with blogs or blogs in the EduSphere. http://stevensdl.motime.com/ - http://explorelearning.blogs.com/blog/ - http://www.ahistoryteacher.com/blog/index.html - http://www.beaconschool.org/~clehmann/MT/

I love the idea of Teacher's blogs. I think there is great potential for using blogs to engage the students beyond the classroom.
But I was really disappointed in the examples that you pointed out.
I'm hoping that Mr. Stevens can inspire his social studies class with his blog and put something about social studies on his blog as opposed to being the rolling list of assignments and upcoming due dates that it currently is.
"The Buzz" appears to be a blog about things that interest the teacher, and not necessarily the students.
"A History Teacher" doesn't appear to have anything about history in it. But if you want to hear about his father's retirement, union dues,...
"A View from the Classroom" defines itself as "The life of an English teaching, tech-coordinating, basketball and Ultimate coaching teacher at Beacon."
But I don't see much of the evidence of expert commentary on homework assignments, or actual educational comment.
We do agree on the potential of blogs to be used in education to engage the students beyond the classroom. I'd be interested in finding some better examples of blogs used "for the students".

I would have to agree with Mark on this even though it's an admission of guilt. I too love the idea but couldn't in my haste find the best examples. Although...I know they exist because I know the spirit that exists in the best teachers.
Somebody, show me some better teacher blogs!

John- If you want an outstanding blog written by an academic, have a look at Jim Mahar's financeprofessor.com. He has another blog specifically for his classes but this one is read by students, laypeople, financial professionals, the financial press and Nobel laureates. The address is http://financeprofessorblog.blogspot.com. As a financial blogger, I am constantly wondering why such a seemingly rich topic for blogging attracts so few bloggers. Haven't figured it out yet. Jim and I seem to be on a bit of an island for now, but hopefully others will jump on board soon.

I've been blogging since January. Most of what I post is historical content, lesson strategies, and opinions on current issues. My primary audience is teachers who teach social studies but they aren't content gurus. I am working on a classroom that will be for students and parents----a daily update on what's going on in the classroom. Blogging helps me clarify my views on certain topics, I get the joy of learning about other teacher's experiences, and I just might be giving someone that tidbit of info they need for their class. Come visit.
