Pay No Attention To That Man Behind The Podcast

One of the latest Internet crazes is this thing called Podcasting

I must admit that on the surface it sounds pretty cool, but then the hype started. . .and I got suspicious.

The Internet marketing folks want you to believe that this is the next great way to make a bundle but nobody seems to notice that podcasting isn't some new form of content it is just another way to distribute content. Upon further study you will notice that most podcasts are little more than mp3 files.

But here's the real problem I have from a business use. The people who have time to listen to audio files all day long already do so. True, now they can listen on their iPod and so maybe there is value in packaging up some information that can be accessed this way but stick to your blog to really tell your story and develop your market.

You are right and wrong. In essence podcasting is only a new distribution method for distributing content in a binary form using rss. I would like to call this binary distribution. You could imagine a teacher distributing word-documents, or pdf's or powerpoint presentations to his students using this technique.
But along with the new distribution method came a 'new' kind of content based on the curry format (The daily sourcode), homemade radio. The audio alternative of blogging. And of course some people where allready doing this before last august, but the podcasting technique really gave this a big boost.
Great example of creativity that comes from this all is the first podcast only novel 'Earthcore' (http://scottsigler.net/earthcore/).
So the technique itself is not such a big deal, but it inspires a lot of people of becoming creative and expressing themselfes, like blogging did for text.

Actually, Podcasting is MP3 files attached to RSS feeds as enclosures, which is really quite nice (just click and drag from inside your feed reader.) Also, portable MP3 players are far more widely owned now than ever before and people are able to take highly personalized digital content to the gym, on walks and bikerides, etc. MP3 files have been around for a long time, but now there are far more options and far more listeners. I love it.

Also, there is the possibility of using Podcasts for internal communication. See Microsoft-centric Podcasts (http://digbig.com/4dfbg), Apple's iPod in the classroom (http://digbig.com/4dfbh) amongst too few examples so far.

I think it has lots of potential. I only read my news from RSS feeds, and if it comes with MP3 attachments or enclosures, then I'll download it to my MP3 player and listen while I'm cleaning my house, etc. What's not to love?
